A NEW Eurospar store has opened in Portaferry following a £3 million refurbishment, bringing 10 new jobs to the area.

The new supermarket replaces two former Spar stores in the Co Down town, run by the McDonnell and Anderson families, who have been trading in Portaferry for over 200 years.

The new premises opened on November 29 following seven months of renovation works. It combines a former hardware store and an ex-bank to create 6,587 sq ft of retail space.

Eurospar is owned by the Henderson Group. It brings the number of new stores opened by the group in 2019 to eight.

Henderson Group retail director, Mark McCammond, said: “We would like to thank Harry and Amy Anderson, and their extended family for all the support with this ambitious project. In particular, we thank them for the partnership we have enjoyed trading together over the last 40 years and we hope to continue their legacy as we embark upon a new era for the store.

“The layout of this store has been specifically designed not only to more than double the previous range but to create a more convenient shopping solution for Portaferry residents. We are pleased to offer shoppers 31 free carparking spaces and hope that the stress-free parking, our free-ATM and extended opening hours, will entice shoppers to the new store.”
