A CO DOWN wine business has bought independent London wine retailer Highbury Vintners.

JN Wine, founded in Crossgar, will invest in the family-owned business which has been serving retail and online customers in the London borough of Highbury for nearly four decades.

Founded by John Sweeney, Highbury Vintners is an award-winning independent wine merchant.

James Nicholson, managing director, of JN Wine, said it had worked closely with Highbury Vintners' previous owners Sean and Gillian Sweeney.

"There is a very strong team in place, and I personally look forward to welcoming each and every one of them to the JN Wine family," he said.

"Alongside introducing new and interesting wines from the JN Wine portfolio, we have ambitious plans for growth that includes a refurbishment of the 1,500sqft retail outlet and increased investment in its digital presence in 2020. The Highbury Vintners name and brand will be reinforced, ensuring its legacy continues."

Sean Sweeney, who has run the business since taking over from his father in 2003, said both companies have a reputation for giving expert advice on wine.

"Our loyal and valued customers, both retail and online, can also be confident that the additional quality offering from JN Wine, alongside excellent service, will keep the values upon which my father founded the business in 1981 alive," he said.

"We wish them the very best for the future."

JN Wine is an independent merchant which supplies wine to high-end restaurants and hotels across Ireland and the UK.

The company also provides a home delivery service via its website.
