A CO Down curtain and blinds manufacturer has announced an increase of over a third in its Republic of Ireland business, partly due to Brexit.

Kilkeel-based Bedwin Soft Furnishing has cited a significant boost from the Euro exchange rate for a 35 per cent rise in profits from the Republic.

The manufacturer, which has additional sites in Warrenpoint and Banbridge is steadily growing its business across the border, recently completing the installation and manufacture of industrial rails and curtains for 85 apartments in Ballsbridge, Dublin.

The family-owned firm is also developing its business in the UK market and last week was awarded an office fit-out contract in Croydon, London to add to a burgeoning list of projects.

Bedwin director, Erica Maxwell said the last 12 months have been very successful for the business.

"It really feels like we are making our mark across the island of Ireland and across the water in the UK also," Ms Maxwell said.

"It has been great to see the commercial and industrial side of our business grow substantially; however, it’s worth noting that domestic work still accounts for around 70 per cent of our overall business model.

"With the way the economy has been moving and the ongoing uncertainty of Brexit, I think we have been well placed to provide value along with high quality manufacturing and installations to customers across the border."

Looking ahead the Co Down manufacturer is planning to increase staff numbers in roles such as interior designers and production managers.

"With our total workforce currently sitting at 22 we envisage upskilling our workforce and increasing it in key areas. This period represents significant growth along with a bright future for the business," sales director, Chris Wallace added.

Founded in 1984 by Ossie and Pamela Wallace, Bedwin opened its first store on the Newry Road in Kilkeel, before adding a further store in Warrenpoint and later

Walker’s Soft Furnishings in Banbridge.

The company specialises in the manufacturing of curtains and blinds, as well as supplying top quality fabrics and soft furnishings to retail, commercial and contract based companies.

Last month Bedwin was officially accredited with TRIBE membership and ALL STAR business accreditation following the completion of two major contracts in Dublin
