A LONG-established Co Derry pharmacy has undergone a significant refurbishment under its new ownership.

McGlaughlin’s Pharmacy on Rainey Street in Magherafelt has been purchased by local pharmacists, John and Niall O'Brien, who take the helm from Ronnie McGlaughlin.

As part of the deal, supported by First Trust Bank, the O'Brien brothers have carried out a significant refurbishment of the premises as part of an overall expansion programme. The O'Brien's, who also own Coagh Pharmacy and O’Brien’s Pharmacy nearby, employ 60 local people across their three sites.

McGlaughlin’s is the latest business to join the portfolio and will continue to trade under its original name.

John O'Brien said the family business has a five-year growth plan in place to increase automation whilst retaining jobs for the local community.

“Despite the current challenges facing the pharmacy sector in Northern Ireland, we remain optimistic and are delighted to have acquired McGlaughlin’s Pharmacy, a business with a legacy of customer service excellence which we are proud to continue," he said.

“The pharmacy is unique as it has a state-of-the-art dispensing robot and pill packing machine that dispenses weekly medication in convenient sachets. Automation is something we have invested time and money into as we see the benefits in terms of efficiency for our staff.

“Another of our unique selling points is our photo lab, founded by Ronnie McGlaughlin, providing a wide range of photographic services for the local area."

Seamus McGuckin, head of business banking at First Trust Bank said they look forward to supporting the O'Brien brothers further as the business grows.

“As someone who was born and raised in the area, I understand the important role the pharmacy plays in the community and the invaluable service it provides for many local people. The continued success of all three of the O’Brien’s businesses can be attributed to their dedication to customer service excellence, commitment to innovation and commitment to the local community in Mid Ulster," he added.
