THIS week's High Flyer is Michael Chandler, managing director of Michael Chandler Estate Agents on Belfast's Ormeau Road. The award-winning company is celebrating a decade in business this year.

What was your first job?

My first proper job was in the gambling industry in Gibraltar. I used to study patterns in rugby matches and set the odds for the public to lay their bets on.

What qualifications do you have?

I left school at 16 and have worked ever since.

What do you attribute your success to?

Being blessed with common sense, an eye for detail and a determination to be successful.

How would you describe yourself to someone who’d never met you?

Honest, fun and always up for a challenge.

Who do you look up to in business?

I have read every Richard Branson book there is and love the way he took so many risks to be successful. But top of the pile for me would be my father, who was also an estate agent with a very good reputation from years in the industry.

How do you get the best out of people who work for you?

I want them to enjoy being in work. My employees are dedicated, and they spend so much time there already that I want to make them the best they can be. I try not to act like a boss, more of a mentor or colleague.

If you could change one thing about doing business in Northern Ireland, what would it be?

I would emphasise to people that quality products and services are always worth paying for in the long run, as they always yield better results.

What website or app could you not do without?

My own website Michael-chandler.co.uk is a vital tool for my business as customers can get to know who we are and the services we offer. It also showcases the quality of our marketing which helps us beat the competition.

What was the last book you read?

You Can’t Hurt Me, by David Goggins – A truly inspirational book that I believe every single person should read. For me, it was the book which put life in perspective and made me realise what human beings are capable of!

What car do you drive?

I currently drive a Porsche Cayenne. I love that I can throw bikes and all my sports gear into the back.

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

In 2018 I completed my first Ironman contest in Barcelona, which is comprised of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, followed by a (26 mile) marathon run – all without stopping.

What’s your greatest passion outside work and family?

Ironman racing for sure! Over the years, I have developed a passion for pushing myself to the limit, and the great thing about it is that it’s a pursuit which my family are supportive of.
