BALLYMENA bus-builder Wrights Group has secured two multi-million pound orders in Hong Kong.

It has been reported that Wrightbus International has won two contracts for 100 buses with long-standing customer Kowloon Motor Bus (KMB).

The deal, reported by Route One, will see 50 Euro 6 StreetDecks buses delivered, along with an order for a further 50 double-deckers with a Volvo chassis.

The new buses are due to be delivered and deployed on Hong Kong routes during the second half of this year.

Wrightbus has been supplying vehicles to KMB since 2003.

The good news at the company comes after 190 staff were cut from its Ballymena base last year.

Wrights Group could not be reached for comment.

Meanwhile Transport for London (TfL) buyers are set to meet with Northern Ireland firms next month at a special networking event.

The buyer engagement event, taking place on February 19, is a chance for potential local suppliers to engage directly with TfL’s procurement team and learn about potential work opportunities

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, in partnership with Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NI Chamber), is seeking local companies to register for the event, taking place in Lagan Valley Island in Lisburn.

Chief executive of NI Chamber, Ann McGregor described it as a "fantastic opportunity" for local businesses.

"It offers them the chance to engage with TfL, which is the owner and operator of one of Europe’s largest integrated transport networks. They run London’s buses, Underground network and some of the London rail network, and are undoubtedly one of the leaders in responsible procurement in the UK public sector," she said.

David Wylie, chief procurement officer at TfL added:

“We look forward to meeting local suppliers at this event in Lisburn, so that they can learn more about our procurement requirements and the opportunities coming up in our supply chain. By working with us, all of our suppliers play a vital role in keeping London moving and driving economic growth across the UK.”
