A PLANNED new summer air route between Belfast and Majorca has run into problems, the Irish News has learnt.

Last year George Best Belfast City Airport said JetsGo Holidays would operate the dedicated weekly charter service to Palma de Mallorca Airport as part of package holidays to the Spanish island resort.

The service was due to begin this coming Sunday and continue until September.

But is it understood JetsGo Holidays was unable to garner sufficient travel trade buy-in for the service, because they held a Majorca-based bond rather than full UK ATOL protection and, as such, there was significant reticence to commit business to them.

Now the JetsGo Holidays planned City Airport-Palma programme has been completely cancelled within days of its launch.

It is now seeking to protect and re-accommodate those booked via scheduled flights from either Belfast International Airport or Dublin, depending on availability.

JetsGo Holidays, which also operates from Manchester to Majorca, was established in 2014 offering fully protected package holidays to Spain.

The tour operator told the Irish News that a problem had arisen with its slots in Palma and it was contacting those customers affected to offer them alternative travel arrangements from other airports on scheduled flights.
