SUPERMARKET retailer Asda is set to open its 18th store in the north, creating 250 new jobs.

Asda has submitted notice of its intention to apply for planning permission for a new Newtownabbey store at the former Nortel site on the Doagh Road, which ceased operations in 2010.

If approved by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council the proposed 40,000 sq ft site includes provision for 450 car parking spaces, a petrol filling station and a site providing Asda's click and collect service.

A new roundabout is also planned to replace and upgrade the junction between the Monkstown Road and the Doagh Road.

Asda senior communications manager, Alan Jones said: “We firmly believe there is genuine demand for a new high-quality food store in the Newtownabbey area. If approved, the development will provide a significant boost to the local economy and create up to 250 new full and part time jobs at the store.”
