THE final hurdle has been cleared for Premier Inn to press ahead with its latest hotel in Bangor after Ards & North Down Borough Council's planning committee gave the application the go-ahead.

The new hotel will represent a £7 million investment in the area and bring around 30 permanent jobs as well as supporting more than 80 during the construction phase.

It will be located on the derelict Bangor Castle leisure centre site on the edge of the town's historic Castle Park.

The latest project from the budget hotel chain – famous for its Hypnos beds advertising campaign featuring comedian Lenny Henry – will be a four storey facility comprising 85 bedrooms.

When the proposal was revealed last year, Premier Inn acquisitions manager Matt Aubrey said plans had been submitted for an 85-bedroom hotel to be operational by 2018.

"Working with our development partner, Conway Group, we have submitted plans for a brand new 85-bedroom Premier Inn in Bangor," he said.

When the project was approved, it would "deliver £7 million in fresh investment" and 30 new year-round jobs, as well as attracting new visitors to the area, Mr Aubrey added.

The Bangor Premier Inn will be the eighth Premier Inn in Northern Ireland for the chain which has more than 700 hotels across Britain, making it the biggest hotel brand in the UK.
