APPLICATIONS open this Wednesday for the popular summer CodeCamp for students aged 14-18, run for the last five years by Belfast-based digital services provider Kainos.

The two-week camp, taking place between July 24 and August 4, will give attendees the chance to boost their skills in computing technology and coding, as well as professional and business skills.

CodeCamp 2017 will be held at the recently-opened Computer Science Building at Queen’s University, which provides the latest in computing technology and connectivity as well as creative workspaces for up to 1,000 students at a time.

It will help students expand their knowledge of computer coding and develop their professional and business skills, and will feature tech-based activities such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) demonstrations, app development, Raspberry Pi tutorials and breakout talks on a range of programming languages and technologies.

Guest speakers will offer career advice and guidance, along with mentoring from Kainos’ professional software engineers. Students will have the chance to win prizes and recognition for their progress and coding capabilities.

Students will get the chance to experience the latest developments in technology as well as learning basic coding techniques.

Applications are open to all students, but particularly those that are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

This year's Codecamp is moving from a first-come, first-served ticket format to an application process, so that everyone interested can be considered for the places on offer.

CodeCamp is part of the Tech Outreach programme at Kainos, which seeks to encourage more students to pursue STEM subjects and careers, as well as boost industry awareness and experience and assist with future work experience placements.

“Inspiring and educating young people about IT and a digital society is essential for their future,” said Gemma Crothers, tech outreach manager at Kainos.”

Applications for places will include a 250-word statement on why the student would like to attend and why they will benefit from CodeCamp. Students can apply at www.kainos.com/codecamp
