TRAVEL solutions company BubbleBum has launched the first smartphone thermometer to the Irish and UK markets in a £3 million deal with Spanish company Oblumi.

The innovative 'tapp' is the first device of its kind and has been developed with the contentment of parents in mind.

Derry woman Grainne Kelly, founder of BubbleBum, the name given to her revolutionary inflatable portable car booster seat for children, said peace of mind had again been to the forefront in the creation of the new product.

"As a parent of a child who had frequent bouts of fever, I'm acutely aware of the precautions people need to take with infants and the confusion that lies with tracking temperature and medication," she said.

"Our objective is to alleviate these concerns and allow parents and carers to rely on the Oblumi device as a practical solution.

"In addition to a being a reliable thermometer for a family member, the Oblumi tapp can also check the temperature of liquids with accuracy and speed, such as the temperature of a baby’s bottle or bath water which is a constant concern for parents."

BubbleBum has signed a distribution deal with the award-winning Spanish company to exclusively distribute the device in Britain and Ireland over a period of five years.

Oblumi was formed in 2014 when four young entrepreneurs won the StartUp Weekend in Seville with the idea of creating a device that would allow another use for the smartphones.

This new functionality turned the Smartphone into a handy, infrared thermometer and, since then, the company has gone on to win several awards and was also recently selected by the European acceleration Fi-Ware project.

The Oblumi tapp works by connecting to a smartphone to create a digital thermometer and has a range of capabilities that are accessed via its free downloadable app.

In addition to measuring a person's temperature, it also gives medication alerts and correct dosage notifications, and works across multi platforms with a profile-share facility for an agreed group of family members.

The smartphone thermometer (retail cost £39.99), which is suitable for use on babies, children and adults, comes with a two-year warranty and is available from amazon.co.uk and from www.bubblebum.co.uk
