Dungannon-based Observer weekly newspaper group ceases publication

THE presses will roll for the last this time week at the Dungannon-headquartered Observer Newspapers (NI) Group.

The company - whose titles included the Mid-Ulster Observer and Armagh Observer - is ceasing publication after more than 90 years.

It is understood more than a dozen staff will be impacted by the closure.

Observer Newspapers has been owned by the Mallon family since its incorporation.

The paid-for broadsheet title and its various regional editions were widely circulated in counties Tyrone, Down and Derry, and at its height the paper sold well over 10,000 copies a week.

In a statement the company says: “The newspaper industry has been subject to a steady decline in advertising and readership over recent years.

"In these challenging circumstances, Observer Newspapers has struggled to sustain long-term sustainability.

“We regret that this has led to a decision to cease publication.

“We wish to sincerely thank our readers and advertisers for their support down through the years.”

In its latest set of accounts filed at Companies House just last month, the Observer Newspapers (NI) Ltd balance sheet showed the company with shareholder funds of £4,273,117.

Its active directors are Desmond Mallon (54) and his mother Mary Mallon (84).

Each of this week's papers carried a notice on their front pages - under the headline 'Final Issue' - alerting readers and advertisers to the shock closure.

In a Twitter post SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone said: "Sad to see another local newspaper go. In my earlier years it was always the 'go-to' paper for dances and entertainment".

Last July the County Antrim Post in Ballymena ceased publishing.

The paid-for title, owned by MD Media (NI) Ltd, had only been launched in January 2012, but had built a regular Tuesday circulation of close to 3,000 copies.
