New Lidl Connswater store to be open mid summer
THE long-awaited revamp of the Lidl store at Connswater Retail Park in east Belfast is to be completed in the summer.
Construction began last week on the new premises, with the contract awarded to Co Donegal firm McCallion Construction Ltd.
Work is expected to take just over three months and it is anticipated it will be open to public by mid-summer.
The budget grocer, with operates 38 stores and employs more than 800 people across Northern Ireland, is replacing existing premises within the retail park with a new modern fit-out it says will offer customers a 'superior shopping experience'.
"Our store will be a visually attractive, modern fit-out which will offer our customers a superior shopping experience," the company said.
"We would like to thank our loyal customers, local councillors and Connswater shopping centre and retail park for their support during the planning process," they added
The new build had been under threat last year after planning officials at Belfast City Council refused Lidl permission to expand the store.
At the time planners said the proposal, if given the green light would "lead to an unjustified out of centre retail unit which would conflict with the objective of focusing main town centre uses within town and district centres".
The decision was overturned a month later after the council received further legal advice and consulted with the director of planning and place.
