Belfast City Council unveils £1bn and 50,000 jobs target

BELFAST City Council has unveiled ambitious plans to attract £1 billion of investment

to the city and 50,000 new jobs.

The authority wants to see the money spent over the next four years on real estate and regeneration projects and has set a 2035 target for the jobs creation.

Among targets to be achieved by 2021 are to create 1.5 million sq ft of addition Grade A office space and create 2,500 new hotel bed spaces.

The council also wants the city's rates base to grow by 5 per cent and support 4,000 small business start-ups.

Other goals include to increasing the population of Belfast by 70,000 people and to double Belfast economic value of out-of-state tourism and welcome a further 1.5 million overnight tourist stays per year.

Belfast lord mayor Brian Kingston said: “The Belfast Agenda is an ambitious vision for the future of Belfast that will create a better life for everyone in the city with inclusive economic growth and improved services for residents and businesses alike.

“There is strong agreement and commitment across all political parties in the council to deliver the city’s first community plan and we want to thank our partners and people across the city who have worked with us to bring it to this point.

“I am now honoured to launch the next stage of the Belfast Agenda consultation process today and would encourage everyone who has an interest in Belfast to read this plan and give their views and provide important feedback on how their Belfast should be in the next 20 years.”
