DROMORE-based haulage and logistics firm Mulgrew Haulage saw an acceleration in its turnover and profits in the trading year to March past.

The family-owned and run business, founded in 1973 by Dermot Mulgrew senior, confirmed in its annual financial returns to Companies House that sales during the year were up 3 per cent from £18.7m to £19.3m.

Mulgrew's gross profit came in at £4,434,454 against £4,018,863 a year earlier, and on a bottom-line basis the trucker's retained profit was £633,600 (up on £473,618 in 2015).

The directors said they consider the profit on ordinary activities before taxation to be "satisfactory in the light of difficult trading conditions".

They added: "Performance in our sector is affected by specific factors such as fuel prices and the board carries out regular strategic reviews including assessments of competitor activity and market trends."

Mulgrew Haulage, which has a fleet of more than 100 distinctive orange-liveried vehicles, has successfully harnessed the latest technologies and innovations to offer transport and logistics solutions in areas such as international haulage, distribution, repackaging, storage and IT solutions

The company continues to expand its Ireland/UK activities, having already successfully established itself as one of the island's leading cross-border operators, with a broad customer base that includes many blue chip companies, specifically in the soft drinks and alcoholic beverages sectors.

According to its accounts, Mulgrew's net assets after liabilities are stripped out sit at just shy of £3.3m.

The company's payroll also increased from 160 to 165 staff, and that pushed its wages bill up by around £160,000 to £4.76m
