THE newly-opened £9.1 million Innovation Factory in Belfast is holding a free Open Innovation Day this Thursday aimed at encouraging along local entrepreneurs interested in collaborating with others to achieve innovation and growth.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of collaborative innovation, and what that could mean for their business.

They will hear from supporting bodies including Invest NI, InterTradeIreland and Helix, whose support services can be accessed through the Innovation Factory on the former Mackie's site.

Frog Digital Media, a software developer which works on virtual reality and interactive learning technology, is the latest tenant to set up at Innovation Factory.

Owner Andrew Hanley, who previously ran the business from his home, said his business had already benefitted from the innovation and growth support there.

He said: “It had got to the stage it was no longer suitable for me to work from home, but it wasn’t just about finding really great premises. Another key benefit for me is the access to the support that Innovation Factory provides which will hopefully help me take my business forward in the right direction.

“It’s fantastic to be in an environment with other like-minded businesses who are interested in innovating, we can share our ideas and feel part of a growing community.”

Majella Barkley, innovation director of the Innovation Factory, added: “We aim to provide a creative working space for start-ups and expanding business in Belfast, especially those involved in innovation, R&D and creative industries.

“Thursday’s event is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas, but who may not have mapped out a plan of taking them forward.

"Businesses will find out more about what we can offer them in terms of flexible working space, and our business support services. It is also ideal for those businesses who may not have the technical know-how in-house, and require an additional level of expertise to bring their ideas to life.”

Attendees at the event will also hear from entrepreneurs on their innovation journeys, their experiences of using innovation within their business, and gain insight into how they have collaborated to achieve growth.

Speakers include Dr Mark McKinney from ATG Services, Janette O’Hagan from Heatboss, and Lester Manley from Trailblazer.

Businesses can register for the event at bit.do/OpenInnovationIF or contact Majella Barkley on (028) 95902800.
