FERRY operator Stena Line said it recorded a 6.5 per cent jump in the number of cars in carried across the Irish Sea last month, compared to July 2015.

The company said the increase continued a strong year after car traffic increased 3 per cent over the first six months relative to the same period last year.

The rise was signficantly greater than those from Britain to other ports outside Ireland.

Holidaying in Britain became a more attractive proposition for those in the Republic during July.

That's because economic uncertainty that followed the Brexit vote saw the value of the pound plummet against the euro.

Stena carries around 614,000 cars across the Irish Sea every year as well as 732,000 freight units and 2.2 million passengers.

The operator has the biggest fleet on the Irish Sea with the widest choice of routes between Ireland and Britain.

From Belfast, Stena Line operates to Cairnryan, Liverpool and Heysham while it also has services from Dublin Port to Holyhead and Rosslare to Fishguard.

The company's head of travel for the Irish Sea, Orla Noonan said: "Traditionally July is a very busy month for us across the Irish Sea as we enter our peak season but to post a 6.5 per cent year-on-year increase in our car volumes pays tribute to the quality of the service we operate.

“It’s encouraging to note that our July performance outstrips the UK and Ireland ferry industry as whole which experienced a 1.5 per cent increase in car volumes according to industry stats.

"As well as strong volume performances we have also managed to deliver some best in class punctuality and reliability stats which is why we believe more customers are choosing to travel with Stena Line.”
