BALLYMENA engineering firm JBE Mechanical Electrical sustained a 15 per cent drop in revenue last year with sales falling to £16.5 million.

However, the company's profit margin in the year to April 2016 improved as pre-tax profits rising more than 20 per cent to £216,039.

The business was set up in 1983 and is now one of the north's best known electrical and mechanical contractors working across the commercial, industrial and retail sectors.

Directors said they were "satisfied with the performance of the company".

"Whilst market conditions generally remain challenging, the directors will seek every opportunity to maintain profitable trading," they added.

The firm is headquartered at Braid River Business Park in Ballymena but has an office in Scotland as well.

Among recent contract wins are several in Britain.

They include an agreement to the design, supply and install installation, lifts at Dalbeattie Learning Campus in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

Meanwhile, it was awarded the contract for the supply and installation of mechanical and electrical services at St Richard Reynolds Catholic College in Twickenham, England.

Closer to home, it has worked on Belfast International Airport, Victoria Square in Belfast and the Odyssey Arena.

Managing director John Blair is well known in local football circles and the company has raised its profile through various sponsorships in recent years.

JBE is a shirt sponsor for Ballymena United while it also provides sponsorship to Northend United Youth FC.

And last year, it was main sponsor of the Northern Ireland Football League Cup.

The firm cut back on production staff last year, meaning the overall workforce fell to 89 from 96 the previous year.

That saw the wage bill reduce to £3m (against £3.2m in 2015).

Pay for directors was also cut back however to £91,132 from £151,919.
