Top job: Stephen Martin appointed new leader of prestigious IoD

NORTHERN-Ireland born businessman Stephen Martin is to be the next director general of the Institute of Directors (IoD).

He has served as chief executive of the Clugston Group, one of the UK's most successful construction and engineering firms, for the past decade.

During this time he has been named Iod's own ‘director of the year' twice and Clugston was recognised in the Sunday Times ‘Profit Track 100' and in the London stock exchange publication ‘1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain.'

Martin was educated as a quantity surveyor at the University of Ulster before moving on to London Business School. A successful career in numerous construction companies across the UK followed, before he settled at Clugston in 2006.

He also found himself hitting it big on the small screen, appearing on channel 4's Undercover Boss in 2009.

Lady Barbara Judge, chairman of the IoD, congratulated Martin on his appointment.

“I am very pleased we have found such a strong leader to take over as Director General at the IoD,” she said.

“He understands the challenges faced by company directors across the UK and I look forward to working closely with him as we help our members adapt to the new world we find ourselves in after the Brexit vote.”

Martin will be taking over from Simon Walker, who has seen the organisation through a rocky period for UK business since his appointment in 2010.

He said he looked forward to the challenge and to working together with Lady Judge to make sure IoD is the organisation of choice for all company directors.

He added: “The IoD's mission to provide excellent professional development for directors is hugely important to ensuring UK companies are well-run, and I look forward to continuing innovation in director training.”
