NORTHERN Ireland's music industry is worth £61.5 million to the economy according to a new report.

The document Output, produced by music business support programme Generator NI puts in the numbers the worth of the sector to the north.

And its director Ross Graham said there was room for "significant growth".

He points to the success of other creative industries such as film and TV and the technology sectors as markers of what could be achieved.

Already the industry in the north supports work of more than 3,800 people, 1,900 of which are directly employed within a music business, while the rest are in music-based roles within other sectors.

Mr Graham said the sector is more wide ranging that many realise.

"Obviously the live music scene is a massive part, but there is a lot of copyright and IP (intellectual property)," he said.

"There has been a growing focus on the creative sectors over recent years and I think the local public sector has been quick to react to that."

He has spent the past three years promoting the industry through the Generator NI programme which is supported by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and Invest NI.

But the scheme is set to come to an end in June.

Asked whether it would be extended, Mr Graham said: "We certainly hope so. We are working on an evaluation that will come out around the same time that the programme comes to an end. We think it will show that it has been worthwhile."

Enterprise minister Jonathan Bell developing the music sector "remains a crucial part of the creative economy in Northern Ireland".

"The Music Business Support Programme, delivered by Generator NI, has helped support and encourage our music sector’s entrepreneurial spirit by ensuring we have the necessary skills and knowledge to fully exploit the substantial export opportunities available within the industry and succeed in a global marketplace," he said.
