THE Galgorm resort near Ballymena officially launched its new £11 million expansion yesterday featuring a unique thermal spa village - the first of its kind in Britain and Ireland.

The investment has created 80 new jobs, bringing the total workforce at the hotel to nearly 400.

Described as a veritable 'Taj Mahal' for the area, the spa development covers 75,000 sq ft and comprises an invigorating snow cabin (with real snow) where temperatures of -15 degrees are said to boost circulation and revitalise tired skin.

Celtic sauna, riverside steam room, log-fired outdoor tubs and indoor pool with heated sun loungers are also among the highlights, complementing the existing offering of hydrotherapy pool, ice fountain, sauna and outdoor jacuzzi pool.

In addition to the spa village, a new guest wing has been added, providing 48 deluxe rooms and suites and crowned by the luxurious 1,300 sq ft signature suite with its own bar and hot tub on private balcony overlooking the River Maine.

Galgorm Resort and Spa managing director Paul Smyth paid tribute to his Galgorm team for helping make "the vision a reality" and also to Invest NI, Tourism NI and Tourism Ireland for their support.

"This is Galgorm's own Taj Mahal," he said, "and it will put us on a global footing when looking to international markets and bringing international visitors to Ballymena."

Tourism NI chairman Terence Brannigan, who officially unveiled the plaque, said the new extension would attract thousands of new visitors "whether for a wedding, a business conference or just to luxuriate in the spa".

"This investment enhances Northern Ireland's reputation as a must-see destination and is a tribute to the vision, passion and commitment shown by the Galgorm team," he said.

Tullymore House Group, which owns and operates Galgorm Resort and Spa, is also developing the Bedford Hotel in a £12.5 million project at the Scottish Mutual Building in Belfast and last year opened Fratelli Restaurant in Great Victoria Street.
