THE Irish News was the best performing title of the three main Belfast morning daily newspapers in the past year.

Figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) found The Irish News sold 37,418 copies a day on average on the three months to June.

This represented a 5.82 per cent decline on the same period in 2014.

However, the actively purchased copies of the Belfast Telegraph fell 7.58 per cent over the period to 34,199 while News Letter experienced a 9.36 per cent decline to 17,361.

Irish News marketing manager John Brolly said: "The encouraging performance for the Irish News is the loyalty of our sale across the week which reinforces the strong package we have on a daily basis with news, sport, business and opinion as well as the additional platforms of parenting, health, arts, education and lifestyle providing a strong reason to come to the Irish News on a daily basis."

The ABC Island of Ireland report showed the Sunday Independent remained the country's best selling paper with an average circulation of 213,549, 94 per cent of which were actively purchased.

Meanwhile, the Sunday World which sold 178,867 on average and the Irish Independent 109,524 of which 85 per cent were actively purchased.
