First female editor for Tele

THE Belfast Telegraph has its first female editor in its 135-year history after Gail Walker, pictured, was appointed yesterday to succeed Mike Gilson. Ms Walker, who was named CIPR Feature Writer of the Year in 2013, began her career with the Tele as a graduate trainee in 1990 and most recently has been the paper's deputy editor (features) and acting editor. Richard McClean, managing director of the Tele's owners Independent News & Media (NI), said: "I'm delighted with Gail's appointment. She faced a very strong field of candidates. With her experience, I am confident she will make an even greater contribution to the future of the Belfast Telegraph as editor. She will lead and continue to drive multi-platform journalism for the Belfast Telegraph. "
