Animal suffering charges

Two Co Fermanagh farmers have been convicted at Omagh Court of charges relating to animal suffering. William Elliott of Glennasheevar Road in Derrygonnelly was convicted of two charges of transporting an animal in a way that caused or was likely to cause unnecessary suffering.

He pleaded guilty and was fined £300 plus £22 costs and £15 offender levy.

A £500 fine was imposed on Gordon Elliott of the same address, who admitted transporting an animal that was not fit for the journey and causing unnecessary suffering to the animal.

The case arose from two animals being transported to Foyle Meats in omagh.

A vet found that one was too lame to be transported while the other was emaciated, was missing its right eye and there were maggots living in the lesion.

The vet believed this animal had suffered greatly not only during transport but for several months before leaving the farm.
