North's tax cheats named

A BROUGHSHANE farmer is the latest person from the north to be included on a list of tax dodgers published by Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The taxman says its name and shame campaign "ensures everyone pays their fair share, creates a level playing field for honest people and businesses, and cracks down on the minority who seek to evade tax".

Mr FJ Graham of Caherty Road, Broughshane was penalised £10,241 based on evading tax and duties totalling £27,868. HMRC's Jennie Granger, director general for enforcement and compliance, said: "Publishing taxpayers' names is not something we do lightly - but this is an important part of HMRC's approach to combating tax evasion and non-compliance. Each person named has cheated the Exchequer out of more than £25,000 and that's unfair to those who pay their tax. In the last year penalties have ranged from £10,000 to more than £2 million."
