Business

Full steam ahead

In the spotlight this week is Peter McMinn, managing director of Travel Solutions, the north's biggest independent tour operator

What was your first job?

I started with Belfast Steamship in the freight booking office and then moved into the complaints department - a part of the business we would nowadays prefer to call customer service.

What qualifications do you have?

Next question please.

What do you attribute your success to?

Having a great team around me and ensuring they understand that everything we do in business is based around the customer. At Travel Solutions we all work extremely hard to ensure we exceed our customers' expectations and the feedback we receive reflects this. I believe it's what sets us apart from our competitors and a key reason why we are celebrating 18 successful years in business this year.

Who do you look up to in business?

Michael O'Leary at Ryanair. I hate how he treats his customers, but the guy has changed how we holiday - for the better.

How do you get the best out of people who work for you? Encourage them to 'buy-in'. Be clear on what is expected and where we are going, and how they play their part.

What website could you not do without?

Pretty obvious - www.travel-solutions.co.uk

Tell us something interesting about yourself?

I hate flying - but it's something I can't avoid in this job.

What sort of car do you drive?

I'm a big Audi fan and currently drive a Q5.

How do you unwind after a busy week?

I love watching live sport - mainly football and rugby. As Travel Solutions sells sports tours, I am lucky to get the opportunity to experience some big sporting events.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in their career?

Focus on your goal and don't let anyone distract you. Reward can come in many forms.

If you could swap jobs with someone else for the day, who would it be and why?

I would be a professional footballer - to experience the thrill and excitement of playing in front of 70,000 fans. I would need to score the winning goal.
