City creating 'most wealth per head'

BELFAST creates more wealth per head than almost every other part of the UK, according to official figures.

With a GVA (Gross Value Added) per head of 153.7, the city is behind only east and west London, Berkshire and Milton Keynes.

The figures have been revealed as the 80th anniversary of Gross domestic Product (GdP) - the measure of the total size of a national economy or national income - is celebrated.

GVA measures the wealth created in any given area after accounting for taxes and subsidies and at that level is equivalent to GDP.

PWC said Belfast's performance reflects growing clusters of high productivity industries and is partly a product of the way the statistics are defined, as the GVA of Belfast city is boosted by commuters who come into the city to work but live elsewhere.
