CULTU?RLANN Ui? Chana?in will host an Oi?che Ghaelach – Irish Night – on Saturday 28th March with all proceeds going towards the costs of repairs to the city’s Irish language youth club’s new premises at An Teach Scoile in Great James Street, Derry.

For the past ten years Club O?ige Setanta has been continually improving and increasing the frequency of the services it offers young Gaels of the city, and the Club has grown significantly over that period.

Fortunately, Cultu?rlann Ui? Chana?in is able to offer the club premises in the form of An Teach Scoile but signicant work and finances are required in order to restore this historic building to use.

Club O?ige Setanta is the largest Irish-medium youth club in the northwest with 169 young people currently registered. Despite this, until now it has not had a space of its own. The young people themselves recognise this fact and they point to the lack of premises as one of the main disadvantages they face as young Irish speakers in this city.

Club O?ige Setanta has provided youth services for young Gaeilgeoiri? since 2009, in particular to those attending Irish-medium schools and to students learning Irish as a subject in English-medium secondary schools.

Having new premises will enable the club to offer services 4 nights a week while running fun, interesting, interactive and inclusive programmes that will all be age appropriate and tailored to speci cage groups.

An Teach Scoile/The School-house, is an historic city-centre building, especially in relation to the education of young women.

It was built in the 19th century as a boarding school for young girls and it’s wonderful to think that this old school-house will soon be brought back to life and rammed packed with young Irish speakers!

Bearing in mind the historical significance of this building in terms of education, it is important to mention that An Teach Scoile will be fully ren- ovated into halls of residence for Irish-language students in 2023.

You can show your support for the youngest generation of Irish speakers in Derry city and join in the celebrations to raise funds at the Oi?che Ghaelach! The night will include a 3-course dinner, ce?ili?, live music and great company!
