Arts Q&A: Fleur Mellor on Glastonbury, The Producers and Postmodern Jukebox

Jenny Lee puts performers and artists on the spot about what really matters to them. This week, dance choreographer and producer Fleur Mellor

1. When did you think about a career in the arts and what were your first steps into it?

I always enjoyed dancing as a hobby when I was younger, so when I found out I could do A-level dance I jumped at the chance and did it alongside a foundation course in performing arts. Then I discovered there were colleges you could train at while doing a degree, the penny dropped, I could do this forever. I ended up going to the London Studio Centre and I've never looked back. Now, I'm more often found behind the scenes choreographing and producing such a wide range of events, but I do still love to dance and it's magical to be on the stage - I'm very much looking forward to that again.

2. Best gigs you've been to?

There have been so many. Glastonbury is up there at the top. I went with a dance company I was managing, so I had the best of both worlds at the artistic end and the audience end. The whole world they create is incredible with creativity oozing out of every inch. It's mad, messy, inspiring, liberating and constantly surprising, I loved it.

3. Fantasy wedding/birthday party band?

Postmodern Jukebox. They are amazing, I love their take on music we already know combined with that 1940s speakeasy aesthetic. I also love that they work with some incredible tap dancers as part of their performances.

4. The record you would take to a desert island?

I'm going to cheat and make it a compilation double album of all my favourite music. I'd have a bit of Primal Scream on there, Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers, Supergrass, Air and some Daft Punk to give me a really great selection of vibes.

5. And the book you would take to a desert island?

The Sherlock Holmes compendium - I love a good old fashioned murder mystery.

6. Top three films?

I love The Producers with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. I never get bored of watching it - it's musical theatre comedy genius. I really like Inception with Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm a massive sci-fi fan and I love the mind bending story line. And, West Side Story is wonderful. The musical score and the choreography by Jerome Robbins really struck a chord with me as a young dancer. I can't wait to watch the new Spielberg version when that comes out.

7. Worst film you've seen?

Every western ever made.

8. Favourite author?

Roald Dahl because as a child the stories were food for the imagination. They were so quirky but also great entertainment.

9. Sport you most enjoy and your top team?

I support Liverpool football team because that's where I was born, but I'm not a big follower of any sports.

10. Ideal holiday destination?

I'd like to go to Cuba before it all changes too much.

11. Pet hates?

I really dislike people who lack integrity and are fun killers. I'm also not good with spiders, they give me nightmares.

12. What's your favourite:

Dinner? Anything I haven't cooked myself.

Dessert? A really good lemon or treacle tart with double cream.

Drink? It has to be a cup of Assam tea. I love tea.

13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?

My oldest best friend from school scooped me up on the bus looking lost and showed me a lot about how to be independent in life. I also have a best friend from performance college. She's the most organised and dedicated person I've ever met. Both incredible women.

14. Is there a God?

I'm a humanist, so I don't believe in a god or gods. I am fascinated by the storytelling around them though and enjoy sci-fi and anything supernatural orientated. Just because I don't believe in a god or gods doesn't mean I don't experience awe or wonder at the world around me though - it's incredible.
