:: The RSPBA Northern Ireland branch's final meeting ahead of its AGM will take place in Trinity Methodist Halls, Lisburn, on Saturday October 31. The annual meeting is then scheduled for the same venue on Saturday November 28. Nominations for election of officers and notices of motion must be received from band secretaries three weeks prior to this meeting. If your band is moved to raise an issue, then get it quickly to the branch secretary at danielle.mccartney@rspbani.org

:: The Greater Glasgow Police band has flipped its top two leadership positions. Current pipe major Duncan Nicholson, who has led the band for five years, is swapping roles with pipe sergeant Iain MacPherson. Under their joint guidance - and that of Banbridge-born leading drummer Eric Ward - the band has enjoyed significant success, including top six placings in the British, UK and Scottish majors. Band manager Niall West said: "Duncan has been an extremely committed and influential pipe major whose musical and personal attributes have been deservedly recognised, but current circumstances create an opportunity for the band to take further steps forward through Iain's leadership. His vast experience, eye for detail and personal drive will assist him greatly in this."

:: A new concise but comprehensive piping tutor book, which takes the complete beginner through all the instruction and movements necessary to become a top class piper, is now available at www.pipingpress.com. Each of the 20 lessons concentrates on a different aspect of fingering technique. There are exercises designed to develop each technique and suggested metronome timings for their practice. Each lesson has either a sound or video file to accompany it - so you can actually see how to make the movements, not just read about them. Go for it!
