A CO Louth actor is one of the hot favourites to take on the role of Superman.

Colin O'Donoghue from Drogheda has emerged as one of the early frontrunners to replace Henry Cavill.

The 37-year-old, who is best known for his performances as Captain Killian 'Hook' Jones in television show Once Upon A Time, is the joint favourite with bookmakers to land the role first made famous by the late Christopher Reeve.

The speculation came after Cavill refused to comment on claims he is to leave the role of Clark Kent. He has portrayed Superman in three movies, most recently in the Justice League film.

Reports this week suggested the 35-year-old actor was moving on after talks about a proposed appearance as Superman in the upcoming Shazam movie stalled.

O'Donoghue, who attended school in Dundalk, is joint 3/1 favourite to don the famous red cape alongside Creed star Michael B Jordan.

Another Irishman, Cillian Murphy, is also being mooted as a contender for the part, along with actors Armie Hamer, Channing Tatum and Donald Glover.

O'Donoghue has also stared in the Anthony Hopkins-led supernatural horror film, The Rite, and had roles in Fair City and The Clinic.
