SILENCE has been Martin Scorsese’s passion project and we are finally getting a peek at what we can expect from the long-awaited epic.

The trailer shows Andrew Garfield and Star Wars actor Adam Driver as Portuguese Jesuit priests dispatched to feudal Japan to search for a missing missionary, played by Liam Neeson.

We barely see Liam in the trailer but viewers can immediately spot how much weight he lost for the role in a shot of him falling to his knees.

Instead we see flashes of crucifixions, religious imagery and violence, all over the sound of screaming strings and intense drumming.

The trailer ends with Andrew ominously saying: “I pray but I’m lost. Am I just praying to silence?”

The film is based on a novel by Japanese author Shusaku Endo and Martin worked on the screenplay with Jay Cocks.

It will be released on January 1.
