Bates Motel, Tuesdays, Universal, 10pm

PSYCHO TV spin-off Bates Motel returned this week with an impressively shocking series opener that found the teenaged Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) finally going 'full Norman'.

Yes, he's now dressing up in his mother's clothes and ready to unleash his murderous oedipal rage upon anyone foolish enough to come knocking on the Bates's door.

As for Norma (Vera Fermiga) herself, she's finally realised that Norman has a few too many screws loose to keep him under control – but is it too late to get him locked up in an appropriate facility, and why isn't her good buddy Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) more interested in helping her out?

Meanwhile, Norman's sickly former squeeze Emma (Olivia Cooke) has gone under the knife for a lung transplant paid for by the gun-running exploits of his big brother (and her current paramour) Dylan (Max Thieriot), an event that finally brings her estranged mother Audrey (Karina Logue) out of the woodwork.

If the opening episode is anything to go by, it won't be too much longer before anyone wanting to live through taking a shower at the Bates Motel had best be washing around a stab vest.
