Big Telly's Freak Show promises craic and heartbreak in Portico, Portaferry

Nicky Harley and Keith Singleton in Big Telly’s Freak Show

BIG Telly Theatre Company is bringing a show inspired by the true story of a 'giantess' from Co Antrim, to Portaferry, Co Down, next month.

Supported by Ards and North Down Borough Council and Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Freak Show promises an inventive blast of theatre in which comedy, visuals and taut poetic text collide to tell the true tales of people who were displayed as freaks in the 18th century.

It was inspired by the story Portrush woman Mary Murphy "who danced for William of Orange and was then exhibited across Europe in a travelling freak show", we're told.

The production examines themes of performance, exploitation and consent and reflects a contemporary fascination with fame, scandal and privacy.

:: Freak Show, written and devised by Zoe Seaton and Nicky Harley; Portico of Ards, Portaferry, Friday March 15; tickets (£15) from ticketsource.co.uk/ardsandnorthdown
