Shane Todd on taking Ulysses to a desert island and pointless Facebook A&E posts

Jenny Lee puts performers and artists on the spot about what really matters to them. This week, Co Down comedian Shane Todd

Topical stand-up, witty banter and story-telling are on the agenda in Northern Ireland comic Shane Todd's new tour, Lonely Child

1. When did you think about a career as a musician/comedian and what were your first steps into it?

I thought about it as a proper career after around three years of doing it as a hobby. The more I did it, the more I told myself if I worked hard enough at it I could go full time at some point. I’ve always been obsessed with stand-up and have been watching it since I was a child. At the age of 16 or so I started going to see live stand-up and two years after that I did my first open mic gig – literally googling "Where can I do stand-up in Belfast?"

2. Best gigs you’ve been to?

American comedian Louis CK at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

3. Fantasy wedding/birthday party band?

The Rolling Stones – it's my mission to see them live.

4. The record you’d take to a desert island?

Brian Regan's comedy album All By Myself. He's my favourite comedian.

5. And the book you'd take to a desert island?

Ulysses by James Joyce. I’ve never read it and I probably wouldn’t on a desert island either, but when they discover my body I'd appear to be very intellectual.

6. Top three films?

The Godfather Part II, Superbad and Stand By Me.

7. Worst film you’ve seen?

The cult film Troll 2. It's either the best film I’ve ever seen or the worst.

8. Favourite authors?

Harlan Coben, James Patterson and Michael Connelly.

9. Sport you most enjoy and top team?

I love football – playing and watching. I’m a Man United fan, but I'll watch any game. Last year I was in York for a show and went to see York City play Newcastle's under 23 team – that's how much I love football.

10. Ideal holiday destination?

I'd like to see more of Europe, especially Scandinavia. I’d choose Copenhagen if you're paying.

11. Pet hate?

People who go on Facebook checking themselves into A&E and write something vague like “Here we go again”. You start to wonder why they're there, what’s happened? Then you read their comments and see someone’s written “What’s wrong love?” The person who wrote the status has replies with "I’ll private message you”. If you aren't going to tell us why you're in hospital – why post in the first place saying you're there!

12. What’s your favourite:

Dinner? Salmon, spuds and a load of veg.

Dessert? Cheesecake in my pyjamas.

Drink? A big pint of tea.

13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?

My mate Ryan 'The Wee Beaver' Tumelty. He got his nickname because his mum told us that as a child he’d chew through anything, and when he was four he managed to chew his way through his dad's favourite Thin Lizzy record. We met about 20 years ago when his Granny lived on my street. He stood out as he was the only wee lad I knew that knew the dance routine to every Spice Girls song. He now teaches Zumba and Pilates in Bangor.

14. Is there a God?

I think there is if you want to be. Personally I’ve never been drawn to any sort of religion.
