THE first new song to be released by the reunited Last Splash era line-up of US alt-rock heroes The Breeders appeared this week.

The pleasingly punky two-minute ditty Wait In The Car sounds like it could have been written and recorded back in the mid-90s by the same short-lived version of the band which crafted their acclaimed 1993 LP and its bona fide alternative hit Cannonball: sisters Kim and Kelley Deal on guitars and vocals alongside drummer Jim MacPherson and bassist Josephine Wiggs.

Released via 4AD, The new song is available to buy and stream on all the usual digital music platforms, but record collector scum are currently getting itchy about mopping up three limited-edition seven inch singles in colour-coded sleeves, each featuring the new tune plus a different cover version on its flip-side.

Irish fans attending The Breeders show at Vicar Street in Dublin on Monday (tickets still available via Ticketmaster outlets) will be able to purchase the orange 'tour' edition featuring the quartet's take on Archangel's Thunderbird by Amon Duul II.

No doubt I'm not the only one who's excited to hear what their version of Devo's classic Gates of Steel sounds like on the yellow 'exclusive to indie record shops' disc, while a red edition including The Breeders' run at Joanne by Monkees man Mike Nesmith will be an exclusive for an as-yet undisclosed outlet – stay tuned to Thebreedersmusic.com/#waitinthecar for exact details and release dates.

Let's hope a new Breeders album is next.
