Arts Q&A: Lisa McHugh on Dolly Parton, Bruno Mars and Cecilia Ahern
Jenny Lee puts performers and artists on the spot about what really matters to them. This week, country singer Lisa McHugh
1. When did you think about music as a career and what were your first steps into it?
From a very young age I remember being so interested in TV shows like Pop Idol and wishing that I could be a singer. I began singing in school bands and then doing some wedding ceremonies in Glasgow which led to a few local gigs in a pub in Glasgow. These gigs sparked a real love and desire to want to do this full time.
2. Best gigs you've been to?
Hands down this has to be when my friends and I went to see Celine Dion in Las Vegas last year. The entire show from start to finish was incredible. I remember leaving the theatre utterly buzzing and having plenty of ideas in my head that I'd love to try and incorporate in to one of my own shows. Other great ones were Lionel Richie and Hunter Hayes.
3. Fantasy wedding/birthday party band?
I would love to have Bruno Mars play at my wedding or party. I just think he is so cool and unbelievably talented.
4. The record you'd take to a desert island?
Dolly Parton's Greatest Hits Collection. I have been a massive Dolly fan since I was around seven years old. Her songs, her voice and songwriting are all way beyond so many artists in the world. I could listen to her all day.
5. And the book?
Being Beyonce. I read this only a few months ago and I learned a huge amount from it.
6. Top three films?
Sister Act is my all time favourite film. I don't know anyone that has watched this and hasn't loved it? Dirty Dancing – I've watched it so many times I even know the script inside out at this stage. And who doesn't love Grease?
7. Worst film you've seen?
The home movie of me doing Irish dancing when I was 10 years old. I can't bear to watch it.
8. Favourite authors?
I'm not a massive book reader to be honest, but I enjoy Cecilia Ahern.
9. Sport you most enjoy?
Water sports. I get a real buzz from being on the water on jet skis and on boats.
10. Ideal holiday destination?
Cancun. It's definitely somewhere Id love to visit again soon.
11. Pet hate?
Laziness. I cannot fathom why people think that everything in life should be handed to them on a plate instead of working hard for it.
12. What's your favourite:
Dinner? Steak Pie, mash, and beans, this reminds me of when I used to live at home with my family in Glasgow.
Dessert? Chocolate fudge cake and ice cream.
Drink? Rose wine or prosecco, every girl loves some bubbles, right?
13. Who is your best friend and how do you know each other?
I'm very lucky to have more than one. I couldn't choose between them. I count my blessings every day to have a group of friends that are always there for me and I can rely on 100 per cent.
