ONE of the hottest records in the world right now is Ruth B's Lost Boy.
The surprise hit which is taking the US by storm was originally written as a simple six second internet clip in which Ruth simply performed a quick snippet of a chorus that was yet to be turned into an actual song.
The Canadian star tells me she is more than a little overwhelmed by the runaway success of her debut release.
“I'm actually stunned by it all,” she laughs.
“Not for one second did I think I was creating something that would be so well received. I wrote the song based on my favourite TV series, Once Upon A Time – it features modern versions of famous fairy tale and fantasy characters and I was very inspired by it.
"So, I just wrote the line 'I am a lost boy from Neverland usually hanging out with Peter Pan' and that was all I had.
"I put up a six second vine of that and suddenly a huge amount of shares, likes and responses started to flood in!”
Ruth then found herself with the slightly daunting task of having to transform her simple idea into a properly constructed full length pop song.
“I was shocked at the reaction and thought, 'uh oh, now I'm actually going to have to sit down at the piano and write the full song', but once I began it all started to flow and the rest of the track pretty much fell into place around the chorus.
"I think in many ways I had already written the hard part which was that Peter Pan hook (no pun intended) but it all still had to be put together and it was very satisfying when it all slotted into place."
Lost Boy has started to make a major impression on download charts all over the world, with people largely unaware of who Ruth B is or whether the song is an old Disney soundtrack song – but if she lives up to her obvious and enormous potential it would seem that Ruth may not find herself flying under the radar for much longer.
Perhaps now the real hard work begins.
“Now I do feel under pressure to make more music and keep things moving in the right direction," she says.
"I suppose the pressure is on but I hope that my new-found audience will respond similarly to other songs that I have written. At the moment though I'm just totally enjoying what's happening right now.
"Some days I still pinch myself just to check I'm not dreaming!'
