The Undertones at The BBC, Monday May 30, BBC Radio Ulster, 3pm

CURRENTLY celebrating their 40th anniversary, evergreen Derry pop punks The Undertones are the subject of this special hour-long Radio Ulster broadcast.

It finds the band – Paul McLoone, John and Damian O'Neill, Mickey Bradley and Billy Doherty – rattling through their classic self-titled debut LP and other tunes from the early days for an enthusiastic audience at BBC Blackstaff House, punctuated by occasional bursts of light-hearted chatter about '1976 and all that' directed by host Stephen McCauley.

"The Undertones' songs are timeless and will last forever," he enthuses of the programme.

"I love these songs and have grown up with them all my life, but it's great to go back and marvel at just how good they really are. I think we take them for granted, but these are incredible musicians, as well as songwriters and when they perform live it electrifies the room.

"I wanted to get back and find out more by talking to them about the first LP and hopefully give listeners an insight as to what makes this band so special."

Local music fans may also want to tune into Radio Ulster's new Duke Special 'special' Duke Box this weekend (Sunday May 29, 6.30pm), which finds the Belfast performer talking us through his love for old 78rpm records and his ever-expanding collection of vintage vinyl.
