The Americans series four, starts Thursday May 19 on ITV Encore
INEXPLICABLY hidden away on the 'selectively available' ITV Encore (Sky channel 123 / NowTV), excellent Cold War spy drama The Americans returns for a fourth series in a couple of weeks' time.
A hit for the FX network in the US, the programme has somehow failed to make a similar impact here (RTE seem to have abandoned it altogether) despite its entertaining premise – Russian KGB sleeper agents posing as a Washington DC-based 'all-American' family unit at the height of Cold War paranoia – reliably gripping storylines and excellent performances from a quality cast headed-up by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys.
Still, the multiple award nominations and wins The Americans has picked up Stateside offers ample evidence that those who have become converts to this suburban espionage saga are definitely on to something.
Series four finds Philip (Rhys) and Elizabeth (Russell) under a heap of pressure thanks to the loose lips of their rebellious daughter, Paige (Holly Taylor).
Will their increasingly suspicious FBI agent neighbour Stan (Noah Emmerich) nab them before they can get hold of top secret info on US biological weaponry?
