Hap and Leonard, Fridays on Amazon Prime Video
THIS new television adaptation of the long-running and much-loved crime fiction series from US author Joe R Lansdale is off to a great start thanks to spot-on casting and a twisted, witty tone tapped directly from the novels.
Set in late 1980s Texas, the six-part series of Hap and Leonard is based on Savage Season, the book that first introduced the draft-dodging Hap Collins (James Purefoy) and his ex-Marine buddy Leonard Pine (Michael Kenneth Williams) to readers in 1990.
The story is basically a treasure hunt gone haywire: the titular, down-on-their-luck blue collar duo agree to help Hap's ex-girl Trudy (Christina Hendricks) and her current squeeze Howard's (Bill Sage) rag-tag bunch of would-be revolutionaries locate the long lost loot from a bungled bank heist.
Needless to say, in true 'get-rich-quick' tradition, things don't quite go according to plan: cue much bickering, double-crossing, kidnapping and outbreaks of extreme violence as Hap and Leonard attempt to extricate themselves from the first of their many highly entertaining jams.
