Look forward to: Stan & Ollie starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy will be portrayed by Steve Coogan and John C Reilly in the upcoming biopic Stan & Ollie

THERE has been talk of a Laurel & Hardy biopic for a few years now, with the last real chunk of news being the announcement that the project was being taken on by Filth director Jon S Baird back in 2014.

However, this week saw the BBC Film production finally getting a title and a pair of leading men to boot: Stan & Ollie will star Steve Coogan and John C Reilly as the titular comedy legends, with a screenplay written by Jeff Pope (who also penned Coogan's recent hit Philomena) and based around the duo's final 'comeback' tour in 1953 – just four years before Oliver Hardy died.

"John C Reilly and Steve Coogan are dream casting for Stan & Ollie," commented Christine Langan, head of BBC Films, "bringing to life with uncanny accuracy and irresistible gusto the genius creative marriage that Jeff Pope's script explores so lovingly.

"BBC Films is extremely excited to crank up this gem."

Stan & Ollie is set to be released next year to coincide with the 60th anniversary of Hardy's death.
