THEY'RE back – TV's mildest leading men Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones are about to return to our screens for a second series of Bafta-winning metal-detecting-themed comedy drama.

Best buddies Lance (Jones) and Andy (Crook, who also writes and directs the show) have now moved on from their Saxon ship burial treasure hunt adventure in Bishop's Field.

As a lost German Second World War plane offers a new source of intrigue, Andy is pre-occupied with bringing up a baby with wife Becky (Rachael Stirling) while dealing with pushy mother-in-law (Diana Rigg, Stirling's real mother).

Meanwhile, having finally scraped off his gold-digging ex-wife, Lance is being steered towards the murky world of internet dating.

Other pressing matters include how best to raise the profile of the ailing Danebury Metal Detectorists Club and the return of 'Simon and Garfunkel' (Simon Farnaby and Paul Casar) of rival detectorists faction AntiquiSearchers, now rebranded as The DirtSharks.

Gently paced and superbly witty, Detectorists is quality, comforting viewing of the highest calibre.
