Hit The North, today and Saturday September 19, Cathedral Quarter, Belfast.

THE Hit The North festival will be bringing more than 30 artists to Belfast's Cathedral Quarter today for what they say is "the largest street art event Belfast has ever seen".

"Initially we started the project as a way to brighten up one of the most run-down streets in the city," explains festival curator Adam Turkington of Hit The North, which launched in 2013.

"North Street has long been a forgotten strip that runs between the busy shopping area of Royal Avenue and the regenerated Cathedral Quarter. Instead of joining the two areas, it has been left as the scruffy, embarrassing scar down the middle.

"We really wanted to change that, and I think we have. We have had so many positive comments about the work we have done over the last two years from people who work in and use the area regularly."

This year, Hit The North aims to spread its colour much wider across the Cathedral Quarter, stretching from Skipper Street to Union Street.

The list of artists taking part includes Christina Angelina (USA), Louis Masai and Irony (England) and Sabek (Spain) alongside regulars like KVLR, Friz and DMC and See No Evil founder Inkie.

An exhibition of contributing artists' work is at The Black Box until tomorrow and there will also be free street art workshops and live music at three Belfast city centre venues throughout Saturday afternoon.

Live acts include Wood Burning Savages, Secret Ceremony, Rory Nellis and the Eunan McLaughin Trio.
