Ash release their new LP Kablammo! on Monday

Ash - Kablammo!

DOWNPATRICK'S finest deliver their first proper studio album in eight years, touted as a return to the band's 'power trio' roots.

Accordingly, Kablammo! explodes into life with guitars ablaze: the fizzy surf rock ramalama of catchy lead single Cocoon is certainly 'classic' Ash and Let's Ride presents a fresh, herky-jerky take on the potent, anthemic power pop that made 2001's Free All Angels LP such a career-saver.

Likewise, the swoonsome, driving indie rock of Machinery and Hedonism successfully tap the hormonally charged rush of debut album 1977.

However, Free's bass-driven strings-tinged break-up ballad and loud/quiet/loud dead love lament Dispatch may strike moodier mid-life chords with listeners hurtling towards 40 alongside their former teen idols.

While not quite fully loaded with direct hits, Kablammo! still packs plenty of catchy/crunchy punches for Ash fans to soak up.

:: Kablammo! is released on Monday. Ash will be performing live and acoustic on May 28 at HMV Belfast, 5.30pm.
