WHAT do you get when you combine Lost, The Prisoner and Twin Peaks? Answer: new US sci-fi conspiracy series Wayward Pines. Starring Matt Dillon, Juliette Lewis, Terrence Howard and Melissa Leo, the titular town is a superficially picturesque Idaho enclave where time moves in mysterious ways and inhabitants are never allowed to leave.

The latest arrival is secret service agent Ethan Burke (Dillon) who awakes bruised and battered in the Wayward Pines woods having apparently been thrown clear of a horrendous car crash.

After his repeated attempts to contact his wife and the rest of the outside world prove futile and the town's ice-cream-eating sheriff (Howard) seems distinctly uninterested in helping him, Burke begins to suspect that something sinister is going on.

His only apparent ally is local bartender Beverly (Lewis), who directs him to a mutilated, badly decomposed corpse and seems to believe it's still the year 2000.

The show, which airs worldwide on May 14 and also features Toby Jones and Melissa Leo, has been adapted by The Sixth Sense man M Night Shyamalan from novelist Blake Crouch's cult Pines trilogy.

The series opener makes for an atmospheric, intriguing watch that's definitely worth a look for fans of it's aforementioned influences – whether the notoriously uneven Shyamalan can keep the 10-part show on the rails remains to be seen.
